Communication to a Child As a Parent
First of all, as a parent, you need to figure out just what communication is. Communication is a method we as human beings use in order to get something across to another living creature. In this article, you are the parent and the living creature is the child. It is important for you to be able to distinguish the verbal messages we sent to one another from the non-verbal messages we send. As we continue this article, we are going to take a closer look at the two types of communication. We are going to start by looking at verbal communication. One would define it as being the words that actually comes out of our mouth. It is only ten percent of the message that we send to our children or anyone else. Did you know that ninety percent of the messages we end to one another does not require any words? Communication with no words is called non-verbal communication. With non-verbal communication, you will be sending words through facial expressions, voice volume, body distance, body positioning, hand gestures, voice tons, eye contact and silence. If we were able to choose between verbal or non verbal communication, we would definitely choose non-verbal communication simply because it is ninety percent communication and is more effective. With communication, what happens first? Eye contact. When we look into another individuals eyes, it is personal and intimate. For some odd reason, it is hard to look into someone's eyes and be upset with them. What does all of this have to do with parenting? Well, the next time something is going wrong with your children or teens, look at them and see if they are looking at you. Initiate that eye contact and chances are, you will be able to re-establish that connection with them.
