Defining Core Values: Teaching Your Kids to Save Money

Do your children understand the value of earning and spending money? Perhaps not as much as we like for them to, many teenagers are simply not concerned or taught the importance of finances. It is our duty as parents to teach them. We are responsible to teach our kids on how to save money. Giving your children an allowance at an early age will help them by understanding the concept of money and investment. In doing so, you will prepare them to learn about money management as they grow older. Here are a few good tips on how you can help your children to save money. Start them off early: Give them an allowance in their early childhood, this introduces them to the money. When you give your child their allowance, give it to them in different denominations. This will teach them about the value of each bill. You can encourage them to keep a certain bill for the future or saving a portion of it. You can motivate them to do this by telling them the money is saved so they can buy that new toy they keep seeing on T.V. This will help them with the lesson of earning something rather than just being given to them. This also teaches the value of money as they save up towards the amount needed for what they want. Educate them on the meaning of money: You can teach your child how to count with money. The different denomination will assist you in simple addition and subtraction; you can also use coins. Remember to be consistent and explain to them the math involved in simple ways. Be repetitive and frequent so that they may be able to remember what you taught them. Explain to your children the value of saving and why you set aside a certain bill each week when you give them their allowance. Make them understand the importance of saving and how each week the amount keeps getting bigger with each bill saved. This will make a big impact in their life as they mature. It is important for you to engage their minds so they can ask questions about money. Have your children earn their money: Giving them chores is a great way to have them earn their allowance. You can pay them small amounts every time they clean their rooms, do the dishes or feed their pets. This concept of having to earn the little amount of money will make them think that money is something they have to work for so they will think twice before spending it. This will teach them to spend more wisely too. Teaching your kids how to save money is not something that is learned in a day or so, but it is one of those core values in life that needs addressing. Be patient in teaching your child, remember to relate the value of money to them in all of their activities. Children will learn about money more easily if we are patient and consistent in guiding them in this endeavor.
