How to Fool Your Family Into Eating Healthy
My Family basically considers me to be a health fanatic. Eating organic foods and avoiding anything processed has been the key to managing my fibromyalgia symptoms. I refuse to bring sodas into the house, but chips and cookies still find their way in. My girls are not very interested in eating vegetables. I wish that I had been better about introducing veggies when they were babies. I was breast feeding, so I assumed that they were getting everything they needed from me. Macaroni, spaghetti, and processed American cheese became staple table foods during the early years. In order to get my girls to eat non processed food, I have had to get very creative and sneaky. Replacing breakfast cereals with a fresh fruit smoothie works great! They actually ask me to make it for them! My shake is made with plain yogurt, 2% milk, frozen organic berries, olive oil, and brown rice protein powder (sweetened with Stevia). While they think they are enjoying a sweet treat for breakfast, I know that they are getting vitamin D and Calcium from the milk, probiotics from the yogurt, essential fats from the olive oil, vitamin C and anti-oxidants from the berries, and muscle building protien from the Protien Powder. For more information on my shake recipe, visit my blog (see link below). Another trick is to hide vegetables in spaghetti sauce. I make my own spaghetti sauce or use organic canned sauce. Tomatoes are particularly susceptible to pesticide contamination. It is well worth while to buy organic tomato products. I sneak veggies like carrots in by pureeing them first. Another sly move is to add a tablespoon of a greenfood powder to the sauce. The powder that I use contains spirulina algae, chorella, barley grass, wheat grass, spinach, beets, and more. Home-made soups are also great. After baking a whole chicken in the crock pot, I save the skin and carcass and boil it in filtered water with onions garlic, celery, and carrots (in the crock pot) for 8-9 hours. Lots of vitamins, minerals, and enzymes are released into the broth. You simply do not get the same nutrients from store bought broth. I use the broth to make delicious soups (usually laced with a touch of greenfood powder). Bacon and eggs are also terrific and tempting. I replace traditional bacon, which is full of cancer causing sulfites and nitrites, with uncured turkey bacon. The eggs that I use are free-range organic eggs. The free-range eggs not only taste better, but they are also higher in vitamins A,D,E,Beta-carotene, and Omega-3's! Sometimes we have a "breakfast supper." I hope that these tips will help you to fool your family into a healthy lifestyle. If you have other tricks that work for you, please let me know about them. I would love to hear from you.
