How to Reduce Stress in Your Teenager?
Stress is a normal part of every day life, but when stress is too much or ongoing it can become overwhelming. As teens are still learning how to cope with new challenges as they move towards adulthood, stress can easily become too much for them. As a parent it is important that you help guide your teen through difficult phases, giving them the tools they need to move forward. There are a number of things you can do to alleviate stress or to at least minimize its effect. Here are five helpful ways to reduce stress in your teenager. 1) Deep Breathing Exercises When a teen is stressed it is very easy for them to get caught in the moment and to just feel so overwhelmed that they want to quit everything. Teaching your child to pause and to take some deep breaths can be one of the best techniques you share with them. By intentionally breathing deeply and slowly you are forcing extra oxygen into your lungs, slowing down your heart rate and calming your body down. This simple breathing exercise also gives your teen something else to focus on, even if just briefly, instead of fixating on their stress. 2) Get Your Teen Exercising Exercise is great for health, cardiovascular fitness and overall mood. Because a number of endorphins are released when you exercise, your body is flooded with a good feeling, regardless of your mood previously. Exercise is thought of as a natural antidepressant, helping to minimize negative feelings. If you can encourage your teen to get outside to exercise, whether for a bike ride or a run, you'll find that will help even more. The fresh air can do wonders for their mood. 3) Help Them Prioritize Often teens take on too much work, whether for school or outside activities. When dealing with a lot of stress often the work piles up and many teens feel like they are trapped by their demands. Sitting down with your teen and helping them to prioritize their work is a good way to help remove some of the pressure. Ensure that your teen is critical about how soon the work is due and what is most important. 4) Get Extra Sleep It can be almost impossible to deal with stress if you're sleep deprived, teens will find it hard to concentrate and just find themselves falling even further behind. Getting enough sleep can be difficult when a teen is stressed, because often they will feel restless and anxious before bed, impairing their ability to sleep. Encourage your teen to wear themselves out with exercise, before committing to reading a book for a while before going to bed early. A well-rested teen will be in a much better position to deal with their stress. 5) Talk to Your Teen Your teen might be holding back a lot of their feelings; whether they're trying to be strong or just don't feel like talking about them. Try to create an environment where your teen feels comfortable talking about their feelings, so that they can bounce thoughts and ideas off you. If you can think back to any times when you were stressed and how you coped, share those experiences with your teen. It's important that your teen knows that stress is a normal part of every day life, but that it's important we don't let it overwhelm us. Let your teen get their problems off their chest and focus on avoiding lectures or long speeches on what they should do. Have you helped your teen deal with stress in the past?
