Having a Baby on a Budget

As small and as fragile as they might seem, having a new baby can hurt your budget a bit especially if you are a new mom and dad. From those baby bottles to that nursery room, it can be easy to splurge on your little one especially if it is your first one. Fortunately, there are a number of ways by which you can provide for all the needs of your little one without necessarily having to go into debt. If you are on a budget, one of the things that you have to do is to focus on what's essential to your baby. Your must-haves would include a crib, a dresser to keep all those baby items, one or two baby shirt, pants, a pair of rompers, two pairs of socks, a few blankets, and lots of baby diapers. Skip on those leather shoes first as your newborn would be able to walk better barefoot. If you can, you might want to consider adding a mobile as well as a crib mattress if your crib does not have one. Buying secondhand can also save you hundreds of dollars. Bargain stores and consignment shops would also allow you to exchange baby items that you do not need for those that your little one can make use of. There are even some online stores that would allow you to rent items such as cribs, furniture, and high chairs for a fraction of a cost of buying a brand new one. Signing up for newsletters can also be rewarding as some baby sites give discount coupons to their members. Aside from this, there are also online stores that host contests and giveaways to regular visitors to their sites. Take advantage of these promos and you would be surprised at how much you get to save. Although throwing a baby shower party might not be such a great idea, you can actually use this event to ensure that you get all the items that your baby would need. Now, in order to ensure that you do not get the same gifts from different people, you might want to consider having a baby registry. Aside from ensuring that you only get those baby items that you need, a baby registry also takes out the guesswork from your guests since they already know which items you prefer to have. Skip on formula milk especially during the first few months of your baby's life. Instead, go for breastfeeding. Not only does this allow you to save a few bucks, it is also a good way to strengthen the bond between you and your little one. Breastfeeding also gives your baby the vitamins, minerals and antibodies that he or she needs in order to fight off infection and sickness during the first few months of his life. Lastly, going for cloth diapers and cloth wipes can also save you a few dollars. You have to be ready, however, to spend time washing these clothes. An alternative would be to buy disposable diapers in bulk. Buying in volume usually means that you get to avail of discounts and lower prices.
